LIVING WITH POSTERITY IN MIND
I raised this issue on my WhatsApp status a few days ago, and I would like to re-iterate it here.A colleague and I were in a conversation with a big tech company recently, and we asked them why they are not providing services in Nigeria. We were shocked when they told us that they appointed a Nigerian Country Director in 2019, but the person ran away with a massive sum of money. He changed his contact, blocked his manager on all social media and even deleted his profiles. They noted that they had the means to chase after him and bring him to book, but they decided to let it go.On hearing this story, I was sad. This company could have provided over 1000 tech jobs for young Nigerians, but one greedy 29 years old jeopardized that opportunity for others. A friend also recently shared how a young man stopped picking his calls after sending him 3million naira to execute a project. He also blocked the contact person from the organization. Many of these badly behaved young people don't know that "trust" is the engine of the new virtual economy. Integrity should be the hallmark of professionals. Many behave this way because they see the money in the deal as very big, and they believe running away with the cash is their roadmap to success. They never realized that any amount of money entrusted to them is a sign that when managed well, more will come.Whatever the reason is for such behaviour, I would like to implore Nigerian young people and professionals to think of the future, national identity, and integrity advantages. If you cannot be trusted with 3million naira, which is roughly 7,000USD, then the poverty mentality has taken over. What if he had executed the project and consistently do more to the point where he can handle a 1 million dollar project?.Let us do better for ourselves and posterity. He gives understanding to the simple.Oluwaseun David ADEPOJU
